The completely redesigned '07 Wrangler JK comes with a 3.8L OHV V-6, which was the main powerplant for some of DaimlerChrysler's minivans. The engine, which puts out 205 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque propels the new JK quite well around town, on the highway, and even on the trail. In fact, we didn't have any issues with the vehicle's power-to-weight ratio while driving the Jeep from Detroit to California. We are a bit concerned that the addition of larger tires, even with regearing, will take performance out of the engine, but we have yet to test that theory. We'll tell you about that in the coming months.
Regarding our drive from Detroit to California in early September, we have to say that the Jeep performed exceptionally well overall on the highway, maintained good gas mileage - it averaged about 16 to 17 mpg - and was also very comfortable. The newly redesigned seats certainly helped keep driver's fatigue at bay.
Visibility from inside the JK is very good: the large front, side, and rear windows offer the driver and passengers a clear view of the trail or highway, and there are no huge and obtrusive A and B pillars to peer around. This is all very important because on-the-trail visibility is a must for negotiating obstacles with a clear line of sight. On the highway, good visibility makes sightseeing that much more enjoyable and driving that much safer.
The new JK is now a permanent fixture here at 4WD&SU. In the coming months and over the next few years, we will keep you posted on the technical aspects and performance of the vehicle as well as the fitment of aftermarket components and modifications. If you are thinking about buying a Jeep, we highly recommend you give the new four-door JK a testdrive.
