Jeep Jamboree 2006 - Valley Of Fire
One of the participants got a flat tire and some immediate attention was required. Considering we had a couple of new people in the group who had never changed a tire on the trail, this turned out to be a great learning experience. Rick, one of the trail guides, lent a hand and showed everyone how to use a Hi-Lift jack and extolled the benefits of having airtools on the trail. The tire was off and a spare on in less than 5 minutes.
Jon Crawley and Amy Smith in their '99 Jeep TJ led us through this steep downhill section early in the day. Their Jeep was running the highest lift-and-tire combination permitted at this event. The suspension is a 5.5-inch Rubicon Express with 37-inch tires. The majority of our group were less equipped, which kept Jon and Amy ahead of the pack most of the day.
Jerry and Ellen David attended the event in a nearly stock '06 Jeep Unlimited. The low height and 31-inch tires made overcoming certain obstacles a little more challenging. They got a bit high-centered but were successfully pulled ahead quickly and continued on. Jerry tells us that a 4-inch suspension lift and 33-inch tires are coming soon.
Mr. Tarantula was spotted just in front of our group prior to setting out in the dirt. Our guide, Kelly, must have a really sharp eye because he spotted our little friend while going pretty quickly down the side road. We stopped to take a closer look, snap a couple of photos, and escort spidey off the road so he wouldn't be crushed by any of us or by the next adventurers. This area is well known for a number of creatures, such as the aforementioned tarantula, bighorn sheep, wild horses, and burros.
Many of the canyons in this area consist of open terrain, which leaves plenty of space to roam. Although it doesn't seem like it, there are many crossing trails which can get you lost if you aren't led by an experienced guide.
This Willys Jeep was the sleeper rig of the day. Even running on 63 hp, it had no trouble getting over anything. This just goes to show you what experience behind the wheel can accomplish. Knowing your vehicle's capabilities and limits is invaluable.
When the rain ceased for a little while, it made for a beautiful day in the desert. Jeep guide Rick Meece made his way through this bump-and-grind section with ease. Tom Thompson, waiting eagerly behind, was ready to give it a go.
