Jeep Jamboree Nevada Trail Ride - The Other Outback
Great Basin is not only a geographic term, but it is also a National Park. About 90 miles east of Ely, we pulled off on the old Osceola Road at the base of 14,000-foot Wheeler Peak.
The Great Nevada Outback Jamboree is all about unfenced wide-open spaces, exploring gold and silver mines of the Mother Lode, the lore of the Wild West, and, of course, Jeeping.
In the 1800s, automated machinery was powered by steam engines, and steam engines were powered by charcoal. The process of making charcoal took 35 days. Conical stone kilns were stacked to the ceiling with juniper and pinion from the local area. Set afire, airflow was restricted as the raw wood slowly and partially burned.
The local Indians knew about the Lehman Caves long before the white man discovered them in the 1800s. Since that time, they have been used for everything from housing to functioning as the local cathouse. Now part of the national park system, they are open for guided tours.
The Mark Smith Signature series Jeep trips offer more than just jumping in your Jeep and driving over rocks. The Nevada Outback Jamboree included lots of unexpected surprises. Our third afternoon included a wine and cheese train ride.
Engine 93 is one of the country's last functioning steam engines, and the old rail line out of Ely is living American history. The original depot is complemented by authentic wooden passenger cars and is run by a volunteer staff.
With the discovery of gold and silver in 1872, Cherry Creek grew from a few ramshackle tents to a booming metropolis of 6,000 souls. Boasting over 20 saloons, this Wild West town was considered the party capital of Nevada. The mines began to play out toward the end of the century and fire swept the town in 1905, destroying about half of the buildings. The mines had a second boom during World War II when the tungsten mines were ramped up for the war effort.
Stokes Castle is an anomaly in the stark desert landscape. Built in the 1800s by the son of a wealthy easterner, the three-story castle was lavishly furnished with fineries from around the world. After being occupied for just two years, it was abandoned and left to the elements.
