The spaghetti feed was incredible, as was every other facet of Trail Tour 2008. There is much more to this tour than just the great 'wheeling. The camaraderie among the participants - including some who have run all four Trail Tours, former trail guides and helpers from past years, and the current year's guides (who provided secret locals-only trails, restaurants, and historical lore) - made for an experience that will not soon be forgotten by those lucky enough to attend. For everyone who wants to see their favorite manufacturers at play, check out the next several pages of photos and their captions from Day One and Day Two. Next month we'll show you Days Three, Four, and Five of this weeklong snowfest. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed shooting them.
DAY ONE - Various Forest Roads in the Panhandle National Forest & the Cascade Inn
The group's meeting point... The group's meeting point in Coeur d'Alene was the stylin' Budget Saver Motel. We took over the whole place, making the parking lot a mecca for Jeep lovers. | Local guide Rick Henson led... Local guide Rick Henson led the gang to the Panhandle National Forest trailhead with his beautiful golden '82 CJ-7. Rick owns Quality Powdercoating in Hayden, Idaho, and his Jeep shows the quality. Power is pumped by a 383 Chevy making a claimed 517 hp! All those horses go through an SM465 "grannybox" and a Dana 300 TC to a 4.56 spooled 9-incher that spins 38-inch Boggers. Since rule number one of Trail Tour is no trailers, everyone drove to all the trails and then aired down. This was the last pavement we'd see for the day. | A view through the dirty windshield... A view through the dirty windshield of R.G. Dickey's TJ buggy shows the ideal snow-trail conditions of the forest roads. We were traveling over several feet of snow, but it was well packed by snowmobiles, making for some fast, slippery fun. |
The first casualty of the... The first casualty of the day was local guide Chad Howell's clutch fan, which refused to clutch, causing a rather hot Chevy 350. | Alan Hewitt, with his trusty... Alan Hewitt, with his trusty ironworker rebar wire, quickly had the errant clutch tied solid. End of problem! | With his fan tied tight, Chad... With his fan tied tight, Chad whomped on the snow with his 39.5-inch Boggers. An SM465 and 205 combo sent all that Chevy power to Moser- and Dutchman-equipped Dana 44 and 60 axles. |
Curtis Warner of Gear Centre... Curtis Warner of Gear Centre Group in Armstrong, British Columbia, Canada, buries his 37-inch Iroks with his heavy foot feeding his potent LS1. Curtis' buggy started life as an '88 YJ, but the T-case is about all that is left. Dana 60s, Detroit and spool, 4.88s, Fox coilovers, and more keep the grille of this "Jeep" in flames! | Andy Burleson of Billings,... Andy Burleson of Billings, Montana, has attended all four Trail Tours with his '47 CJ-2A. New this year was the bright-green paintjob and a custom, homebuilt intercooler setup attached to the 4BT Cummins he has stuffed into the little flattie. | Josh Allen is all smiles riding... Josh Allen is all smiles riding his Detroit Locker banner turned sled while his dad Tom had his PSC JK winched out of the snow by the boys from Warn in their fully equipped TJ Unlimited. |
