If the ore car held valuable ore, the load was dumped to the left in a pile that awaited further processing. If the ore car held tailings, they were dumped to the right. Incidentally, when you needed to answer the call of nature in the mine, you did your business in a 'honey pot.' The honey pot was dumped in with the valuable ore! This sounds counterintuitive, but the tailings pile just sat while the ore pile was washed and processed. If the honey pot had been dumped in the tailings pile, all that 'honey' would have made a pretty big stink as the weeks and months went by. View Related Article
