Traffic seemed sparse for Memorial Day weekend. At the self-serve Shell station, a pair of BMW motorcycles readied for an overnight stay on the playa. Black Rock Desert State Route 34
Gerlach, Nevada, is the jump-off point. A few miles north of Gerlach, State Route 34 loses its paved surface and continues through Washoe County. The Granite Mountains unfold northwest of the route. Peaks tower to 9,000 feet elevation, standing more than 5,000 feet above the Black Rock Desert Playa.
