 | The stock NP249 transfer case... The stock NP249 transfer case was shelved in favor of an NP231 equipped with a heavy-duty slip-yoke eliminator kit. The 231's part-time function and the manual locking hubs of the swapped-in Dynatrac Dana 44 up front allow Tom to run on the highway without spinning the front drive components. | Front and rear suspension... Front and rear suspension links meet at a Sky's Extreme Offroad combination crossmember and skidplate. Built from a heavy-gauge steel plate, its low profile tucks it in out of the way. When trail obstacles get tall enough, the Sky's crossmember proves its strength by remaining tweak-free even after prolonged bashing. |
Looking forward, Tera lower... Looking forward, Tera lower links, Sky upper links, and a Dynatrac Dana 44 front axle come into view. The camera angle makes it look as if the witness line on the lower link has moved, but it hasn't. Tom's own driveshaft propels it all. | Dynatrac-built Dana 44s grace... Dynatrac-built Dana 44s grace both ends of the ZJ. This one is filled with 4.56 gears and an Eaton ELocker. ELockers were used in both front and rear differentials. Tom notes, "When things get tough on the trail, it's a simple push of a button to lock either differential. An ELocker in the frontend reduces steering effort when four-wheeling because the ELocker can be unlocked during hard cornering." | Rocker panels are damage-free... Rocker panels are damage-free behind a pair of Sky's Extreme Offroad skidplates that seamlessly blend with the Grand's body lines. Sky's was also responsible for the paint that sets this trail rig apart from its unmodified counterparts. |
Driveshafts are an oft-forgotten... Driveshafts are an oft-forgotten part until something goes wrong. Tremendous stress gets routed through the U-joints, slip-yoke, tubing, and end-yokes as the shafts dutifully turn mile after mile. Tom Wood's driveshafts can be built around any required length and any axle and drivetrain combination. | | TrailReady front and rear... TrailReady front and rear bumpers offer heavy-wall steel-plate construction, favorable approach and departure angles, good looks, and a home for the winch on the front bumper. Towhook loops are there in case they're needed. |
