Pro Comp Jeep JK Kit - Moab Invasion
The new Smittybilt JK front bumper exceeds 70 degrees in approach angle. Not bad for a bolt-on unit.
It took some pretty big balls to attempt this climb in a short-wheelbase TJ. However, Chris Bolger was happy to be out of the office and doing what he enjoys most, so he let go of his worries and hammered it. We don't know of a better way to relieve the stress of everyday life.
On Day 2, the group tackled Hell's Revenge trail. Hell's Revenge features several steep and unnerving "optional" routes that can be downright scary when wet. However, Ryan Kennelly displayed his courage by piloting Pro Comp's long-arm-equipped TJ up the infamous Hell's Gate obstacle with ease.
Climbing the "Water Fall" obstacle on Poison Spider Mesa gave us a good chance to learn what makes Pro Comp's new JK kit different from other long-arm kits on the market. Notice how the rear lower arm is seen dragging against the rock ledge in this photo. We questioned Pro Comp's resident Jeep expert about the material used for this part and whether or not it was designed to hold up to this type of abuse. Our suspicions were relieved when kit designer/fabricator Ryan Kennelly informed us that each boxed lower arm was constructed of hot-rolled, pickled, tempered sheet steel. The shape of the arm is triangular so as to distribute force loads while each side of the arm is further strengthened by a section of fish plating. The construction of this part is similar to that of a Trophy Truck rear lower link arm.
There is testing, and then there is just plain fun. This steep obstacle was nothing more than a chance for the strong-willed to show off their bravado. We watched as Smittybilt's new product fabricator, Justin Trainer, took the company JK for a spin. Needless to say, the combination of water and incline was too much for this rig, but the fact that Justin was willing to risk it all for a good photo made us believe Smittybilt's future is in good hands. Notice the new line of bumpers ... the days of 3-inch tubing are long gone for Smittybilt.
In the wintertime, Moab's slickrock trails are even more challenging because pockets of water fill in the low spots mixing with sediment from surrounding landscape, creating a reddish brown mud. The results were perfect for testing Pro Comp's latest tire offering, the Xtreme Mud Terrain. We watched as each rig tackled a steep and slippery ledge climb just after coming through a section of red mud. It was impressive to see rigs sporting the new Pro Comp rubber make it up without issue. While one of the other rigs in our convoy had another brand of tire which kept slipping, the new Pro Comp Xtreme M/Ts made ample traction for this scenario.
