The front Dana 44 was plucked... The front Dana 44 was plucked from an '85 Chevy pickup, and remains full width. An ARB Air Locker and a 4.56 ring and pinion set fill the front diff, which is protected by a Bob-built guard. The high-steer arms are also owner-built and keep the tie rod and drag link above the leaf packs and out of harm's way. | Thirty-seven inch Interco... Thirty-seven inch Interco Truxxus tires mounted to chrome modular wheels look great and work just as well. When combined with locked-up ARB's there's no shortage of traction. | Square-tube rock sliders cleanly... Square-tube rock sliders cleanly follow the body lines. Bob incorporated an entry step just under the door. Nice touch. |
The rear axle is a favorite... The rear axle is a favorite heavyweight: a Dana 60 sourced from a Jeep J4000 pickup. It, too, received 4.56 gears and an ARB Air Locker along with another owner-fabbed diff guard. Rear leaf springs come from an '85 Wagoneer, complimented by another set of Doetsch shocks. Note the air tank amidships between the frame rails: this is the reservoir for the Air Lockers as well as the supply for a multi-purpose external air fitting. | A small-block Chevy seems... A small-block Chevy seems right at home in its transplanted surroundings. This one's a '69 fitted with a wedge beneath the stock Q-jet carb that lets the engine run well at altitude. There are 300 ponies on tap. The York compressor comes with its own oil sump, making it ideal for onboard air systems. The York supplies the 4-gallon air tank between the frame rails under the bed. | This clever anti-wrap link... This clever anti-wrap link spans the distance between the leaf-spring hanger and the stock Chevy sway-bar mount. The springs are stock '96 YJ items, and the shocks are by Doetsch Tech. |
Inside the bed, there's a... Inside the bed, there's a place for everything and everything's in its place. The window sticker reading "Old Age and Treachery will Overcome Youth and Skill" is our second-favorite. Our all-time favorite? "Yes this is my truck. No, I won't help you move!" | If you're following this in... If you're following this in Colorado's San Juans, you're not gonna get lost. | Bob adapted front and rear... Bob adapted front and rear fender flares to cover the extra width of the Truxxus 37s. |
In the backcountry, an on-board... In the backcountry, an on-board air system is often worth its weight in gold. The aforementioned air tank feeds this weather-protected air chuck as a pressure gauge reveals what's available. The aluminum tread plate panels are as aesthetic as they are functional, providing a steady step and protecting the blue sheet metal beneath them. The panel's outermost edge was TIG welded to the adjoining panel. Anyone familiar with TIG welding aluminum can recognize a good bead, such as this one. | There's a modern-day Ramsey... There's a modern-day Ramsey winch at the front of that classic grille. Bob, a retired mechanic and welder, enlisted his son's help to build the front bumper with its sculpted lines and integrated winch mount. | The Dana 300 T-case is gear-driven,... The Dana 300 T-case is gear-driven, compact, and stout. An Advance Adapters output shaft and tail housing upgrade it further. |
