1974 Toyota FJ 40 Land Cruiser - Mean Green
With no inner fenders, mounting everything under the hood was a challenge. The battery is mounted upright against the firewall, the air compressor and tank are mounted off of brackets on the engine, and the hood pins come off of the mounts for the aluminum radiator.
The stock front axle was upgraded with disc brakes, 4.88 gears, a Lock-Right, and Longfield Birfields. There is a tubular skidplate under the oil pan and transmission.
The interior is Spartan, with no carpets or floor mats. A Grant wheel, Pioneer stereo, and Steel Horse seats replaced the stock components. We like the shifter: It looks like it's from the stock manual transmission but actually controls the TH350.
Even with straight sheetmetal and marginal gearing, Crews isn't afraid to play in the rocks with his Land Cruiser.
The exhaust is tucked up high between the framerails and snakes around the shocks. The center limiting strap keeps the driveshaft from coming apart when the rear is at full droop.
The stock rear axle was upgraded with 4.88 gears, an Aussie Locker, and a fine-spline pinion and driveshaft flange. The traction bar helps control axlewrap with the spring-over and attaches to the transfer case crossmember.
Custom rear spring hangers are mounted outboard of the frame and accommodate the longer F-150 springs without limiting ground clearance.
A custom tubular crossmember tucks the transfer case up between the framerails and protects it from rock impacts.
The steering arms from 4x4 Labs place the tie rod above the leaf springs and behind the axle where it's safe from rocks.
The rolling stock consists of 37-inch Super Swamper Iroks clamped to American Racing rims with Champion beadlocks.
The front stinger bumper protects the Warn HS9500i winch and fiberglass hood.
