Recreational Groups Petition for Land Access
The California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs (CA4WDC) led a coalition of recreational access groups in entering the latest lawsuit challenging recreational access to the California Desert Conservation Area in Southern California. The latest suit filed by anti-access groups opposes the West Mojave Plan (WEMO plan) and the Northern and Eastern Colorado Desert Management Plan (NECO), which encompass a significant amount of the land in Southern California managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The CA4WDC, along with the BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC) and the United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA), has filed a motion to intervene with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in response to the lawsuit.
Dennis Porter, attorney for the CA4WDC, states, "The recreational groups seek to participate in this lawsuit to defend the right to legitimate recreational access to the Mojave Desert."
The BRC's public lands director, Brian Hawthorne, adds, "BRC is excited to be a part of Cal 4's intervention. This is an important case, not only to our members in Southern California, but also because of its potential to affect route designation planning in other areas."
Hawthorne also notes that the combined legal expertise available with the three recreational groups is impressive.
The BlueRibbon Coalition is a national recreation group that champions responsible use of public and private lands and encourages individual environmental stewardship. It represents over 10,000 individual members and 1,200 organizational and business members.
