AGR Rock Ram Steering Install - Steer Pressure

AGR Rock Ram Steering Install - Steer Pressure
The AGR Rock Ram uses a 1.5x8-inch cylinder fit with a 5/8-inch piston rod. The kit also included the necessary mounting tabs and two Heim joint ends.
Mel Wade of Off Road Evolution in Fullerton, California, began the installation of the AGR system by removing the power steering pump. He then removed the stock pulley so it could be installed on the new pump. The stock pump tank will not be used since we'll install a remotely mounted reservoir.
The pulley was then installed on the new AGR Super Pump. Note the massive fluid return fitting that will attach to the new reservoir.
Mel then installed the new pump and torqued the pulley bolts to the proper specifications. Since the serpentine belt had to be removed, we used this opportunity to install a new belt and tossed the old one in our spare parts box for the trail.
Here the new pump is shown installed with the lines plumbed. The upper fitting serves as the supply line and extends to the Vanco Hydroboost brake system before feeding the steering gear. The large return line attaches to the reservoir.
The AGR SB2 Series Super Box is a work of art, but its interior refinements are what provide its nimble steering effects. The firmer valving maintains a sports car feel at the steering wheel, with rapid steering response and decreased steering effort. The box also features seamlessly braised-in fittings for the ram cylinder supply and return lines.
Mel installed the new AGR steering box using the stock hardware. The existing pitman arm was also transferred from the old box. Note the fluid supply and return lines attached to the fittings on the top of the steering box.
This isn't the first time that we've installed a ram-assist steering system on this TJ. Due to gross driver error, negligence, and a failure to carry the proper tools and supplies on the trail, I succeeded in completely ripping the original cylinder mount right off the axle and nearly grenaded the steering gear as well. Needless to say, we had a bit of custom fab work to do before the new ram could be securely mounted.
Mel used a torch to clean up the torn metal around the coil spring mounting plate so a new cylinder mount could be fabricated. You might note that the boxed area beneath the destroyed mount serves as the axle mount for Tri-County Gear's relocated track bar. We'll use this boxed mount to add strength to the cylinder mount.
To ensure the most secure mounting of the cylinder, Mel added a plate atop the Tri-County Gear track bar mount and then welded a double-sheared cylinder mounting tower above that. The tower was also gusseted to the axletube on the backside.
With a secure axle mount for the cylinder constructed, Mel attached the AGR ram in place to determine the proper location for the tie-rod mount. Once the accurate positioning was determined by cycling the ram side-to-side to ensure that it didn't continue pushing after reaching the steering stops on the knuckles or within the box, Mel then welded the provided tabs to the tie rod and added gussets to each side.
With the tie rod installed, the AGR ram cylinder was then bolted up to the new axle mount.
