Engine And Transmission - Scratch Built Cars - Motor Installation 101
Using an engine hoist, the engine and transmission were slowly backed into the Jeep. They were placed as close to the firewall as possible to ensure proper clearance for all other components.
Since the transfer case output will be located on the driver side, we needed to measure from the frame to the center bolt on the crank, then offset the center 1-inch to the passenger side. This allows room for the front driveline.
After measuring and setting the motor in its correct location, we clamped the mounts to the frame location. This assists in keeping the motor aligned while the transmission is centered.
For centering the transmission, since the transfer case output will be located on the driver side, we needed to measure from the frame to the center bolt on the crank then offset the center 1 inch to the passenger side. This allows room for the front driveline. This also ensures that both the motor and transmission are parallel with the frame, giving the Scrambler driveline a straight shot to the differential.
After the transmission was measured and located in its proper mounting location, we checked around it for proper clearance from the body. Then, we marked and drilled the holes for the final mount.
Once everything was in place, it was time to make the final alignment checks before welding the motor mounts in place. We started by checking the level of the Jeep frame.
Then, we checked the level of the motor. Both the frame and motor should be the same to ensure the motor is square with the frame.
After that, it was time to check the layback angle on the motor. For proper operation of the fuel system, it needs to be between 0 and 4 degrees.
The front grille was installed for the final measurement before welding the motor mounts to the frame. This measurement ensures proper clearance for the radiator and fan blade assembly. To do this, we measured from the face of where the radiator will be located to the mounting surface of the water pump. We needed a minimum of 1 inch of clearance between the fan blade and the radiator.
After all of the aforementioned checks were completed, it was time to weld the frame mounts into their final locations.
This is how the motor mount system should look when installed properly. Notice the complete system is square, with no dramatic or sharp angles.
Project Scrambled Adventurer now has its motor and transmission installed.
