Jeep TJ Coilover System - Comfort And Capability
The kits are shown here. All brackets are laser-cut from 1/4-inch steel plate. Also shown is the removable engine crossover support bar that installs over the engine under the hood. Bumpstop kits are also shown.
The Sway-A-Way 2.0-inch-diameter RaceRunner remote-reservoir shocks feature a threaded shock body. We'll install the 14-inch-travel shocks up front and a set of 12s in the rear.
Eibach Springs supplied two coil springs for each shock. The coils help the shocks control the rate at which the suspension cycles through compression and rebound.
The rear coil spring bucket was removed from the framerail.
With the passenger-side shock mounts tacked in place, the suspension was fully cycled to determine that nothing was binding or interfering with other components.
The new double-sheared rear lower shock mount is shown here.
SAW is always making improvements to its products, including these new anodized Schrader valve caps that protect the Schrader valve from damage and also act as an extra seal.
The rear lower shock mounts were removed from the axletubes to make way for the new provided mounts. The brake hardlines on the axletube were relocated to the front of the axletube, and the brake calipers were also eventually resituated so that they sat at the top of the rotor instead of below it.
Even with the suspension fully compressed, the rear shock setup will still have available travel so that it won't bottom out. Note that the extra length on the upper shock mount frame bracket will be trimmed. The bracket is shipped long to allow for varying placement for each application.
With placement determined, the cutting began.
The bracket was test-fitted in the frame notch before being trimmed to the proper size.
Here, the bracket is shown welded in place. Note where the bracket is notched so that it can be welded to the framerail through the seam.
The front stock coil spring and shock mount were marked for cutting.
The inner fenders were marked for cutting where the shock mounts will protrude through. It was necessary to relocate a few of the factory smog equipment items that were mounted to the inner fenders.
The fender and the stock brackets were cut to permit installation of new Poly brackets.
