Although I still drive my rigs to the trail and back for most adventures, I'm not above strapping them to a flatbed trailer for extra-long runs to the trailhead. I get added peace of mind that I'll still make it home even if I break down, and I get a lot more space to carry extra camping gear or tools and spare parts. When I initially started trailer-towing my 4x4, I used a set of large, industrial-style ratchet straps that were much larger than necessary for the application. The straps were 20 feet long and always tangled up, and their size added an extra 15 to 20 minutes to the job of loading and securing the TJ to the trailer. Also, the extra 16 feet of strap had to be tied out of the way, often simply wrapped around the bumper. These days, however, I've discovered a better method.

The 8-foot length of the Poly Performance axle straps is perfect for securing the TJ to this trailer. I used to secure the straps to the D-rings on the bumpers, but the axles provide a much more stable mount.
The Poly Performance Axle Strap Combo Kit includes four 2-inch by 8 foot ratchet straps with enclosed hooks. The straps are available in black and come in an ultraconvenient black buggy sack marked with a Poly Performance logo. Integrated axle straps with an enclosed hook and loop are used to secure the vehicle in place and feature protective sleeves so the straps won't become damaged. The working load of the straps is 3,300 pounds each, but they are max-rated at 10,000 pounds each.Since I began using the new straps, my trailer-loading times have decreased greatly and I also spend less time retightening the straps since they rarely loosen up like the old setup used to. The storage bag is also a huge asset since I don't have to search for all four straps individually every time I need them.
Crisscrossing the rear straps offered the best fit. The integrated axle straps were handy for clearing the brake lines on the axletubes. | The integrated axle straps are shown with the protective sleeve and enclosed hook and ring. | With ample length for our application, it's easy to tie the excess strap out of the way so it won't whip against the trailer and fray the end of the strap. Also shown is the crisscross method of routing straps. |
