We began the installation of the new Sony stereo head unit by removing the instrument-panel top cover and the center bezel. The center bezel is held in place by two screws on top and one behind the ashtray. We also used this opportunity to clean up some of the dust and dirt trapped behind the bezel.

The stock stereo in '97-'02 TJs is secured using two bolts at the face and a bracket that attaches to the rear of the unit and the bulkhead. The bracket is somewhat difficult to reach and requires removal of the glovebox for access. A ratcheting open-end wrench is very helpful in removal.

Stereo Install Stereo Connections
With the stereo removed, the rear support bracket is visible. The bracket also serves as an attachment point for the stereo ground. Since the bracket isn't used with the Sony head unit and Quadratec install kit, we relocated the ground to the bracket's upper mounting stud on the bulkhead.
