Currie Jeep Towbar System - Flat-Tow Your 4x4
The Currie universal collapsible towbar is designed to be used on Jeep CJ, YJ, and TJ vehicles. A quick-release pin is in place to secure it to the vehicle.
To secure the towbar on our Jeep YJ, we'll install these Currie tow shackles. The Currie shackles are the same length as the stock shackles, so no change in vehicle height is expected.
These extended shackles were already installed on our YJ to provide a small amount of lift to clear larger-than-stock tires. We'll lose a short amount of height with the installation of the new Currie shackles, but we'll install additional new suspension components to create a better overall lift setup.
We began the installation by supporting the frame and axle and removing the front shackles. The new side plates were then secured to the stock spring hangers.
The front shackles were then installed on the frame and secured to the springs. Once the installation was completed, we lubricated the bushings through the zerk fittings on the bolt heads.
The quick-release towbar brackets were then installed on the tow shackles.
With the front shackles in place, the Currie towbar was attached using the quick-release pins.
The towbar ball hitch was attached to the receiver ball and locked in place with the provided nut and bolt. The towbar arm adjusters were also tightened, and the safety chains were secured to the tow rig.
We acquired an inexpensive set of magnetic tow lights from Harbor Freight. The lights offer 20 feet of line to the rear of the Jeep and have a standard four-wire connector that plugs into the tow vehicle using a pigtail harness adapter.
The magnetic tow lights have plenty of wire between the lamps to stretch to either side of the vehicle.
Currie Enterprises also recently released a towbar mounting system for the new '07 Jeep Wrangler JK.
The JK towbar uses a bolt-on frame mount that extrudes from beneath the stock bumper and secures using a quick-release pin.
