Because of the new four-door configuration, the interior space of the new Jeep JK is vast compared to what you would find in previous Wrangler-model Jeeps. However, even with all of the new cabin room, most of us still never have enough room for all of the adventure gear we need on the trail. When this problem arises, it's time to look into roof-rack options. JK Racks of Vista, California, has just what you're looking for in a roof rack whether you have a two- or four-door-model JK with either a hard or soft top.
Chris Duncan, the owner of JK Racks, has been around the off-road world for years. You may have seen a few of his show-winning Landrunner vehicles or even taken a ride in one of his submarines off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. Innovative is barely enough to describe some of the creations that he has been responsible for over the years. With a resume like Chris's, you can rest assured that his new JK racks are worthy of sitting atop your new Jeep.
Installation begins with placing the four Y-shaped tubes at each corner facing up. Two of the legs are shorter, designating them as the front corners of the rack. Each corner is then connected. | After the base is assembled, each section is bolted together using the provided 1-inch self-tapering panhead screws. | As each section comes together, a bead of the provided gasket silicone sealer is applied between each section coming together. This ensures a proper seal. |
When the base is complete, it is flipped over. | Next, the rack is laid on the ground and each half is lined up. A nylon washer is placed on each of the hinge pins that will attach the main rack to the base. The rack is slid together and hinge pins are inserted into the hinge pockets located on the rack. There are two empty rings in the middle of the basket that line up with the two hinges on each side. A 1/2-inch bolt is then installed on either side, locking the rack to the base.
The rack is bolted to the base, and the entire JK Racks unit is just about ready to be installed on a Jeep vehicle. | Since this is the four-door tilt-away rack, the gas shocks need to be installed. The thin shock-shaft half is mounted to the rack's base, and the thicker gas-cylinder half is mounted to the rack.
