1997 Jeep Cherokee - The Bump Stops Here
An indentation in the base of the EVS bumpstop permits it to fit atop the shock body cap so that it is compressed across the entire face of the foam bumpstop.
With the EVS foam bumpstop in place, the shock-eye bushing was installed and the shock was mounted back up to the vehicle. We'll be afforded greater control of the vehicle and its suspension components due to the enhanced damping of the compression stroke. Bottoming out the suspension will also be alleviated.
In order to further damp suspension activity, we'd also replace the factory bumpstops, which were hardly up to the task of stopping suspension compression with the longer Rubicon Express coil springs and shocks in place.
In place of the stock front bumpstops, we installed a set of Daystar's urethane extended bumpstops. The extended bumpstops popped right in place and will help keep the tires from pushing through the fenders as the suspension compresses.
The stock rear bumpstops were more than a little cruddy. Years of salted roads had weathered them down to mere nubs that weren't up to stopping an inch of uptravel let alone the more than 10 inches that the Cherokee was capable of.
The Cherokee's tailpipe was the first victim of the 10-year-old stock bumpstops after we tested the long-arm suspension system on a whooped-out road.
Shown alongside the puny stock rear bumpstop, the new extended rear bumpstop from Daystar will be a great upgrade.
The salted roads did more than wear down the stock rubber bumpstop over the years, they also rusted just about every bolt on the vehicle's underside. In removing the stock bumpstop, one bolt on each side sheared off, leaving us to find a remedy for mounting the new Daystar units. The Tri-County Gear crew came up with a simple solution of welding a plate with threaded studs to the area on the unibody where the stock bumpstop was mounted. Once the plate was welded in place, the Daystar extended rear bumpstop was bolted to it.
