Shock Guide - From The Track To The Trail
Although many of us won't ever jump our rigs, heavy rolling stock and beefy axles can still yank hard on shocks if you lift a tire. This is where limit straps play a vital role.
Limit straps are designed to stretch and rebound just like recovery straps. Produced in a variety of lengths, limit straps can be used in a single layer for lighter duty or in tandem or triplicate for heavy-duty applications. Limit straps should stop the suspension's movement before the shock fully extends. At least 1/2 inch of shock shaft should show when the limit straps are in place and the suspension is fully extended.
Yes, this is a 2WD desert truck, but this photo shows the full suspension concert. Coilover and bypass shocks are mounted side-by-side with the lower mounts in line with the suspension movement. A properly placed bumpstop protects the shocks at full compression, and a properly placed limit strap protects the shocks at full extension. This truck handles rough terrain at warp speed. Integrate this technology into your trail rig and you can crawl or haul with equal ease.
T&J Performance Center custom-fabbed an extended bumpstop to solve the problem.
Limit straps stretch a little as they age. To take up the slack, Kartek Off-Road sells this slick adjustable limit-strap clevis.
Todd Steele's Formula Toyota buggy is mostly crawler, but it proved a competent hauler through the sand washes and whoop sections between Wrecking Ball's terminus and basecamp at Means Dry Lake. Steele uses Deaver leaf packs and Bilstein 5150 monotube shocks.
