All-Pro's low-profile drain plug replaced the damage-prone stock item. Next, a short section of tube was welded around the plug to form a protective ring.
Next, two steel straps were cut, shaped, and welded between the differential armor, the drain-plug protector, and the bottom of the housing. This gives rocks and other trail obstacles fewer places to hang up.
The armor was secured with welds up both sides and across the lower edge. The drain plug (at the lower left) had taken lots of abuse and needed some remediation to be trailworthy again.
I sanded down the ring around the drain plug for maximum clearance.
The knuckle balls can sometimes bend, so I cut, shaped, and placed two-piece gussets between the knuckle balls and the housing. This is not the strongest way to make a gusset for this particular application, but it is low-profile and better than nothing.
The stock Low-range ratio is 2.28:1. Although this ratio is adequate for most easy to moderate trails, it's not low enough for the trails I have in mind for this truck's future. Advance Adapters' dual transfer-case kit is the ticket to true creepy-crawly Low-range ratios.
Extra-low Low-range gearsets require additional internal real estate. This means you'll need to grind the inside of your transfer case to make the needed room. Advance Adapters makes a transfer case housing that's ready for the extra-low gears right out of the box with no grinding required. This is a smart investment, considering that the AA housing saves grinding time.
