Toyota 4runner Three Different Steering Gears

The Toyota models discussed in this article used three different steering gears. Shown left to right are the '79-'85 gear, the '86-'88 IFS 4x4 gear, and the '89-'95 IFS 4x4 gear. The '89-'95 gear received a different sector shaft and is a quicker ratio than the '86-'88 gear. Both IFS steering gears are also plumbed for power steering coolers. The IFS steering gear is used for SAS applications and to achieve crossover/high-steer setups in early-model trucks.
