Toyota 4Runner Ifs Steering Gear
An IFS steering gear is shown installed on an early-model pickup. It is also equipped with a high, crossover steering arrangement. On some models it's necessary to trim the inner fender well to fit the steering gear on the frame.		 Toyota 4Runner Crossover Steering System
A high-steer crossover steering system is in place on this pickup. A crossover system indicates that the drag link crosses over to the passenger-side steering arm. The high-steer part of the system positions the tie rod above the leaf spring.		 Toyota 4Runner Engine Shot 22Re Engine
The 22RE engine makes a good swap into earlier-model pickups. The EFI engine requires an ECU, an engine wiring harness, and a body harness from an EFI-equipped pickup, but companies such as Off Road Solutions offer ECU and harness kits to complete the swap. A power steering cooler is also shown installed in front of the radiator. It is plumbed to an IFS steering box.
Toyota 4Runner W56 Transmission
The W56 five-speed transmission came in '85-'88 Toyotas with the 22RE engine. It uses a removable aluminum bellhousing (not shown) and is one of the ideal factory five-speeds for heavy-duty use. The W56 is also well-suited to V6 and V8 engine swaps.		 Toyota 4Runner 1979 Transmission
The '79-'83 five-speed transmission used a cast-iron case and bellhousing, but it isn't as stout as some of the later-model transmissions.		 Toyota 4Runner Double Transfer Case Crossmember
When a double transfer case setup is installed, it's best to support it with a stout transfer case crossmember. A BudBuilt crossmember is shown.
Toyota 4Runner 1995 Automatic Transmission
Toyota used just one automatic transmission in its '95-and-earlier pickups and 4Runners. The auto trans was factory-married to a transfer case that was different from all other Toyota cases. Inchworm Gear offers an adapter that allows the auto trans to bolt up to a geardriven T-case.		 Toyota 4Runner Front Differential
When Toyota switched to IFS, it used the IFS 7.5-inch front diff. This diff can be fit with lower gears and a locker, but the suspension capability is still limited compared to that of a solid-axle and leaf-spring setup.
