An alternative to the standard open winch hook is this interlocking safety hook. It uses a spring-loaded catch that closes full circle around the attachment point to prevent the hook from falling off or otherwise detaching from the pull point.

Synthetic winch rope is essentially a hollowcore weave of many strands. besides being very light, it is highly flexible and does not kink or otherwise retain any abnormal shape. It tightens when pulled onto the winch spool but pops right back to full shape when pulled back off the spool.

Synthetic winch rope can be used with a roller fairlead, but a better alternative is a composite or aluminum Hawse fairlead. the rope glides smoothly over these, and this type of fairlead is much more compact on the front of your rig. a cast-iron fairlead is too abrasive and will abrade the rope.

Fairleads such as this one made from a nylon-like material have been available inexpensively, but our experience shows these fare poorly over time. Hard, angled pulls will leave "burn" impressions in the material. Machined-aluminum fairleads work much better and facilitate high-load side pulls well.
