This illustration shows a common crossover setup where a rotating pitman arm translates to linear draglink movement that then rotates a steering arm on an axle knuckle. If a longer pitman arm is used, it will provide greater angular movement at the knuckle (tire), but the power of the steering will be proportionately reduced by the amount the pitman arm is lengthened. Conversely, if the steering arm is lengthened, angular knuckle rotation will be reduced, but the mechanical advantage of the steering box to move the steering knuckle will be increased. View Related Article
