Hydraulic-assist steering is usually credited with helping us steer big tires on the trail without killing our forearms after a day of wheeling. However, there's another big benefit to the addition of a hydro-assist setup. Since the anchor end of the assist ram is often tied to the axle housing, part of the stress that was placed on the framerail where the steering box is mounted gets off-loaded to the ram anchor point. This reduces the risk of frame cracking near the steering box location. Here too, as with the pitman and knuckle arm pieces, the hydro ram travel must be chosen so that it is compatible with the knuckle angular movement and its mounting chosen so that there is no interference or binding under any travel or articulation conditions.
